How to study for the ACEM Primary around a full clinical roster
You do not have six-hour blocks. Most registrars have thirty minutes on a good day. That is enough, if the thirty minutes go to the right place.
Diagnose before you study
The most common mistake is to start at the beginning of a textbook. It feels productive, but it spends hours on what you already know. Start by finding out where you are weak. A set of timed questions across all four sciences, scored by domain, tells you more in an hour than a month of reading.
Once you know the weak domains, your plan is no longer “cover everything”. It is “close these gaps first”.
Short, frequent sessions beat long ones
Memory is built by returning to material over time, not by one long sitting. Thirty minutes most days outperforms a long block once a week, and it fits around shifts. Keep a short session you can run on the worst day: ten questions, review the wrong ones, stop.
Practise recalling, not rereading
Rereading feels familiar, and familiarity is mistaken for knowledge. Questions force recall, which is what the exam demands. When you get one wrong, spend your time on the concept behind it, not on the answer. If you cannot explain it in your own words, you do not own it yet.
Revisit the gaps on a schedule
A topic you got wrong on Monday should come back later in the week, and again the week after. Spaced repetition does this deliberately. If you do not use a tool for it, keep a short list of the topics you missed and return to it each week.
Sit a timed paper before the real one
Exam day should not be the first time you sit a full paper under time pressure. Pacing and stamina are skills, and they only improve by practising them. Schedule at least a few timed papers in the final weeks and treat the results as information, not a verdict.
Protect the basics
Sleep after a night shift matters more than another forty minutes of study. Tell your supervisor or DEMT what you are preparing for. They can help you protect time and see where you are struggling.
