The ACEM Primary gives you three attempts. How to decide when to sit

The limit turns a simple question, “can I sit this one?”, into a harder one: “is this the right sitting?”

What the limit is

ACEM allows up to three attempts at the Primary Written exam and up to three at the Primary viva. Each attempt needs a new application and a new fee. ACEM’s examinations page also states that a candidate who is unsuccessful on their final attempt may be considered for removal from the FACEM Training Program.

Check the current rules on ACEM’s website before you plan around them. They are the college’s to set and to change.

Why an early sitting is not free

An attempt that goes wrong costs more than the fee. It uses one of your three, it takes weeks of preparation that you cannot reuse in the same way, and it costs confidence going into the next one. The cost of waiting one sitting is usually smaller than the cost of using an attempt before you are ready.

That does not mean waiting for certainty. Nobody feels certain. It means sitting when the evidence says you are likely to pass, not when the date happens to arrive.

What evidence looks like

The Primary Written is 360 questions across two 3-hour papers, sat in one day. Practise at that length, at least a few times, so the stamina is not a surprise.

Look at your results across several full papers, not one good day. A pass-level result that holds across papers is evidence. A single strong score is not. Check the four sciences separately as well, because one weak science can undo strength in the other three.

Plan backwards from the sitting

There are two Written sittings a year. Applications close several weeks before each, so decide by the time they close, not in the week of the exam. If your recent papers are below standard at that point, moving to the next sitting with a stronger result is often the better outcome.

Ask for an outside view

Your supervisor or DEMT has watched trainees sit this exam before. Ask them where they think you are weak and whether they would sit this time. An outside view cuts through the comfort that familiar material gives you.
